Path Conditions
The Karbachalm cable car (observe operating times) takes us to our starting point, the Karbachalm, at 1,590m. At the mountain station, we can already enjoy the wonderful views of the Hochkönig, the Tennengebirge, the Dachstein, and the Niedere Tauern. We hike downhill to the Karbachalm (trail no. 75b) and pass the terrace on the right side of the hut. Now trail no. 15 becomes a bit steeper, but after about 300m we follow the trail to the right. Here we cross the lift line and continue through a cool forest with gentle uphill and downhill. The forest opens repeatedly, revealing impressive views of the Hochkönig massif. Finally, we reach a forest road, crossing it several times downhill into the forest and follow trail no. 79 downhill (watch the markings on the trees) to the Althaus saddle. The last stretch to the Althausalm is along the forest road, enjoying views towards St. Veit and the Salzach valley. At the Althausalm, we can refresh ourselves and prepare for the next part of the hike. We then follow a broad forest road uphill to the Hubertus chapel, where the hunters also celebrate numerous solemn services. Now we have to turn left, and the trail leads steeper uphill through a forest. With some luck, we can find chanterelles and porcini mushrooms beside the path. After the ascent, the forest clears, and we take a short break at the resting oasis, enjoying the magnificent panorama before descending towards the Pronebenalm, where we refresh ourselves with a Hochkönig snack and homemade juices. From the Pronebenalm, a narrow forest trail, also called the "Path of Good Thoughts," leads steeper downhill until we reach a flatter pasture. We greet the friendly cows and continue cheerfully along a farm road to the Paussbauer. The sculptures by Mühlbach artists now accompany us through the Paussenberg gallery back into the village. At the end of the Paussenberg gallery, we turn left over a small bridge and walk through a residential area and past the ice rink towards the village center. After the ice rink, the path crosses a bridge to the right; on the left side is the Bauer bakery, marking the center of Mühlbach and the destination of our hike.
