Grandlspitz via ferrata

Grandlspitz via ferrata

Short (about 170 m long) difficult via ferrata above the Erichhütte. A good alternative to train for the Königsjodler. Also good as a combined route with the Taghaube.

Hiking time:

  • Ascent from parking to Erichhütte about 1/2 hour.
  • From Erichhütte to the start of the via ferrata about 1 hour.
  • Via ferrata about 1/2 - 1 hour.

Path Conditions

Like with the Königsjodler, you head to the Erichhütte and continue towards Hochkönig. At about 2000 m, the approach to the Grandlspitz via ferrata branches off to the right. Keep right towards a saddle and then cross to the left under the rock face. You need about 40 minutes (140 m elevation) for the via ferrata. From the summit, you descend southeast into a saddle and go right down the gully (partly secured). Then cross left around a ridge to the saddle of the ascent route. The small but fine Grandlspitz via ferrata naturally loses significance compared to the neighboring Königsjodler, although it can easily keep up with its "big brother" in exposure and difficulty. The via ferrata was mainly built by Richard Franzl as a "test via ferrata" for the much more difficult Königsjodler. But it is worthwhile not only for that; a combination with the Taghaube crossing (partly secured A/B) also makes for a beautiful and extensive round. Despite its short length, it should not be underestimated – exposed and demanding.
