The beautiful and scenic hike from Hinterthal to Hochmais and Gabühel leads along forestry roads, forest and meadow paths. The two huts (Steinbockalm and Gabühelhütte), located along the route, invite you to stop and enjoy. For the descent, you have several options to choose from, including a valley ride with the Hochmaisbahn on the designated opening days.

Path Conditions
Your route starts in Hinterthal at the church, where you can also park. From there, you pass the Gasthaus Obermussbach and take the first forest road No. 34, which leads you up to the Filzensattel. Once at the top, continue to follow path No. 34 to the Hochmaisalm. Then hike on trail No. 35 up to the Steinbockalm. Here you have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain landscape. About 5 minutes from the Steinbockalm is the managed Gabühelhütte, which also invites you to stop for a meal. After a generous rest at the Steinbockalm or the Gabühelhütte, return to Hinterthal. You can either take the ascent path back or use the forest trail that starts below the Gabühelhütte and then leads via the forest road back to the Filzensattel (paths No. 51, 51a, 50). From the Filzensattel, follow path No. 34 back to Hinterthal.
