Path Conditions
From the Unterberg car park (E6) a steep hiking path (no. 445) leads us over the Eberlalm and the mountain inn Christernreith to the unmanaged Schranbachalm. Here we enter a longer forest section (path no. 28b) and eventually reach a clearing where we cross path no. 28. We follow path no. 28b to the left, past the rock formations called Steinerne Mandln, and some unmanaged huts. A short flat section above Langegg invites a rest break. Ahead of us we can already see the Hundstein summit with the distinctive Statzerhaus. The last ascent to the destination can be hiked via a wide forest road (no. 445) or a narrow, steeper hiking trail that shortcuts the curves of the forest road. The Hundstein offers an impressive panorama: to the east the Dachstein, to the south the snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern such as the Kitzsteinhorn, the Große Wiesbachhorn, the Großglockner close enough to touch, to the west the Wilder Kaiser, the Leoganger Steinberge as well as the blue shimmering Zell Lake in the valley, to the north the Steinerne Meer and the majestic Hochkönig. We enjoy this view of the natural beauty of this mountain world and strengthen ourselves for the descent, which takes place along the same route.
