Ski tour to Ahornstein
Ski tour to Ahornstein
Start your ski tour at Dientner Sattel, where you will find a free parking space right next to the Mittereggalm. Strap on your skis and enjoy the first swoosh downhill while passing by the Dientalm. Pay attention to the sign for ski tourers which will show you the right way. Initially, the route ascends a small forest road. Often you will find tracked paths leading you through the woods – partly steep, but this is exactly what makes the challenge! After some effort, you will reach the lift line of the Kingscab Gondola. Your first goal is the top station, so keep up the pace! Cross the plateau and head into the open terrain towards Kollmannsegg. It’s best to keep right of the reservoir. The ascent to Kollmannsegg gets steep, so be sure to watch the avalanche conditions, especially when there is a lot of snow. At the top, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view towards Schneebergkreuz. Even though there is no summit cross there, the view is definitely worth it! From here it goes down a bit before you tackle the last ascent to Ahornstein. It takes only about 15 minutes, but every effort is worth it! The view southwards to the snow-covered peaks is breathtaking, and the Großglockner is clearly visible. At the top, a summit cross crowns Ahornstein – the perfect place to take a well-deserved break and enjoy the impressive surroundings. For the descent, follow your ascent route back to the piste. If you want to have a small stop, the Tiergartenalm directly next to the piste is a great option. Then continue downhill on the piste, passing by the valley station of the Kingscab. Be careful not to ski too far down as a few hundred meters below there are high-voltage pylons to the left. Here you put the skins back on and follow the pylons westwards. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Hochkönig while approaching the Dientner Sattel. The last short ascent finally brings you back to your starting point. Plan about 2.5 hours for the entire tour – a perfect mix of physical challenge and impressive views! Get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the way to Ahornstein!

Path Conditions
Start at the parking lot at Dienten Sattel near the Mittereggalm. First, do not put the skins on your skis yet. Ski some altitude meters downhill in a southerly direction until you reach the start of the forest road. Now follow the forest road. Always stay on the path until you reach the lift line of the Kingscab Gondola. At the lift line, a groomed ascent track specially made for ski tourers begins. Use this track to reach the top station of the Kingscab or Dacheggbahn. Once at the top, cross the plateau and enter the open terrain heading towards Ahornstein. Follow the ridge crest to the summit cross. Here you can enjoy the breathtaking view. If the avalanche danger is suitably low, you can ski down the slopes directly eastwards to Klingelbergalm. However, be sure to avoid the steep slopes if avalanche danger is high. In that case, it is best to return via the ascent track. A nice variant leads from Ahornstein along the ridge over Predigtstuhl and Schneebergkreuz to Schneeberg. From there you can return to the ski area. Note: The options are varied but also partly steep and confusing. If you don't have good local knowledge, stick to the easiest line for the descent or join a guided group. Have fun and a safe tour!
